Pennekamp opened the school year with its annual New Student Social. PEP, Kindergarten, new students and their families came to the campus on Thursday, August 28th where they were greeted by their teachers, met Principal Dale Keldrauk and the PTA executive board, participated in numerous activities and went on campus tours guided by returning students. On the first day of school, outgoing MBUSD Superintendent Jerry Davis and incoming Superintendent Dr. Gwen Gross welcomed everyone to the 2003-2004 school year at the District Office.

Rounding out the week was the grand opening of the new Mira Costa High School athletic track. As the MCHS fight song played, Superintendent Jerry Davis lead everyone on the first lap. Made of California recycled tires, the track was jointly funded by the California Integrated Waste Management Board, the city of Manhattan Beach, MBUSD, the Mira Costa High School PTSA, students, various community organizations and private donations.
