Girl Scouts at Pennekamp
1st Annual Girl Scout Event
November 13, 2003

Troop # 653, many of whom began scouting as first grade Brownies at Pennekamp and now attend Manhattan Beach Middle School, hosted the first Pennekamp Girl Scout event on Thursday, November 13.  Led by Janine Bushman, Barbara Hedges and Mary Kneale, Troop #653 welcomed first through fifth grade Girl Scouts representing all Pennekamp based Troops #436, #647, #934, #935, #965 and #987.

In attendance at the ceremony were Frances Johnson of Angeles Girl Scout Council and Dale Keldrauk, Pennekamp Elementary Principal. We thank Pennekamp for supporting Girl Scouting through the use of facilities and other actions.

Creating community amongst the Girl Scout Troops within Pennekamp was one of the main goals of the event. This year, ceremonies included investing fourteen girls and rededicating seventy-five girls to Girl Scouting and passing along the new Pennekamp Senior Symbol which is a banner to be used and displayed by the eldest troops at Pennekamp as a symbol of honor.  The first recipients of the banner are the fifth grade girls of Troops #436 and #987.

It is planned that each fall, the graduating Pennekamp troops will host investiture and rededication ceremonies and pass along the senior symbol to the new eldest troops.

For seven of the nine members of host Troop #653, this event marked the final step in earning the highest award in Junior Girl Scouting – the Bronze Award.

Troop No. 653 is part of the Live Oak Neighborhood of the Angeles Girl Scout Council. If you or your daughter are interested in becoming involved in Girl Scouting, please contact Anne McLaughlin. Anne is the Girl Scout mentor for Pennekamp based troops.
