Student Services Committees

The following committees report to Student Services VPs Avigal Horrow and Leslie Whittet:

Artist in Residence: The PTA funds the Artist in Residence program which provides classrooms with access to three talented artists throughout the school year.  Ms. Radha teaches drama classes which result in a performance for their peers and parents (i.e. Three Piggy Opera).  Mr. Hugo teaches a wide variety of art classes, Ms. Dulce provides dance instruction to the classes and Mr. Lewis provides vocal music instruction.  Both children and teachers look forward to learning from these artists each year!

Contact:  Kim Friedman

Authors’ Week: For one week in February, a children’s book author spends AN ENTIRE WEEK living in Manhattan Beach and working at Pennekamp.  Each student attends an assembly AND has a lesson in their class with the author.  Parents participate as Mystery Readers, dressing in costume as a character from a favorite book to read to students.  Contact: Shirley Ritter and Chana Schaffer

Poetry Breaks contacts:  Cathey Graves and Denise Ellis

Cultural Arts: PTA sponsors three assemblies each year featuring artists representing many cultures. This year’s assemblies are “Imagination Machine", "Backhausdance", and "Vybration".  Also, performances of "letter to Harriet Tubman" and "I, Nat Love" will complement the academic curriculum for our 5th grade classes.

Daffodil Days: This committee coordinates “Daffodil Days”, a spring fundraiser benefiting the American Cancer Society.

Family to Family This committee offers a helping hand to Pennekamp families that may need assistance during difficult times.  They may make meals, offer babysitting/carpooling, help with grocery shopping, etc.

Fifth Grade Promotion & End-of-the-Year Party:  5th graders are given a rousing send off as they leave Pennekamp for MBMS. Their event takes place in June and requires fifth-grade parent volunteers. The 5th Grade students also raise money for a gift to be given to Pennekamp from their class.

Halloween Parade: Students parade around the field in their costumes to delight parents and one another with their characters and creativity.

Contact: Jeanette Thue

Ice Cream: Every Friday after school, PTA sells ice cream to students to celebrate the end of a great week.  Students purchase ice cream in the cafeteria after school and then mingle with one another and parents.  This is a longstanding Pennekamp tradition!

Marquee:  Ever notice the marquee on Peck Avenue? A PTA volunteer keeps it up to date with upcoming school events.

School Photos: All Pennekamp Dragons have their School Photos taken in late September or early October. Families have the opportunity to purchase photo packages.  A Make-Up Day is also scheduled for those who were absent.

Talent Show: Every year, Pennekamp mounts a spectacular display of our students’ great ideas and talents.  Dancing, singing, playing the piano, and acting out skits are just some of the acts we’ve seen over the years.

T-Shirts: Every year, a new T-Shirt is designed and printed for Pennekampers to wear to demonstrate their school spirit.  Dragons wear their shirts every Friday and on field trips.

Yearbook: Each year, PK publishes a yearbook that chronicles the school year.  Photos will be solicited through your child's room parents during the year.
